Reviewed Mar 14th, 2015 by I have owned this receiver since new and among my many of my collection is my favorite. It was underpriced and undervalued but is a monster super receiver-160wpc minimum per channel, 5 gang tuner and incredible audiophile sound.
I have been playing mine daily for 46 years without ever a problem. This truly was as good as any Pioneer, better than any Marantz and equal to the best Sansui's. I would never get rid of it as it is reliable and produced great sound and FM reception.
Reviewed Dec 31st, 2014 by I still use this receiver daily. The FM section can bring in any station. The power is enough to knock down anything not glued down. The primary use now is for subwoofers on my home theater system.
I have a Pioneer SC1523K with 9.2. I put the sub out into the Kenwood aux in. My speakers are 4 HPM 100's. With the front ports this thing feels like getting a punch to the body. I also use my Sharkk bluetooth to another input an can put MP3's right into it and now have remote control. I can still use it as it was designed. Best of new and old technologies.
Reviewed May 07th, 2013 by I have owned this receiver since new. I bought it in 1976 at the height of the really big receiver battles. I looked at Pioneer SX1250, Sansui G9000 but was sold on the 165 WPC @ 0.08 THD.
It is still around and is in the basement hooked to a giant pair of Cerwin Vegas. I use it when go down and try to clean up. It still sounds as good as it did when I bought it 36 years ago. I used it originally with a double Advents (large) system that would keep the neighbors up until all hours.
I had a Sansui belt drive turntable that my dad still has. Later a Thorens TD 160. Anyway the Kenwood KR9600 would play loud and clean. I listen to the Pionner the Sansui at length before I bought. After all in 1976 $700 was a whole lot of money back then equivalent to $4000 in today's dollars. I would say that I got my moneys worth. I understand the Pioneers had problems with their new at the time toroidal transformers not holding up and very expensive to replace.
The Kenwoods have conventional transformers and a true dual power supply to virtually eliminate crosstalk and inter modulation distortion. Pioneer claimed dual power supplies but shared the transformer. The Kenwood KR9600s rarely come up for sale but when they do they are a bargain.
I almost forgot to mention the two phono inputs one for 250 millivolt and one for 500 millivolt and the great FM section. In those days FM was booming but you needed a big antenna unless you lived near the transmitters.
I could pull in stations with a simple dipole from many miles away. If you see a Kenwood for sale buy it!
