Symbol files make it easier to debug your code. The easiest way to get Windows symbols is to use the Microsoft public symbol server. The symbol server makes symbols available to your debugging tools as needed. After a symbol file is downloaded from the symbol server it is cached on the local computer for quick access. I have a bizarre problem with inserting symbols like trademark (TM) or registered trademark (R) in Word 2016. If I select it from the insert ribbon (Insert - Symbol - (R)) everything is ok. But if I use ALT + CTRL + R shortcut key the symbol is inserted not in superscript but normal script.
See the illustration below: First symbol was inserted using the ribbon and second symbol using shortcut. The second symbol has exactly the same font settings as the first one (i.a. The same size, script position) and no special effects or any other more advanced settings. I played a little bit with short cut definitions in Word and the problem only exists if the font selected in symbol window is '(normal text)'. If I select any actual font (e.g. Arial) the symbol is inserted properly using defined shortcut. But I don't want to have different shortcut definitions for fonts I use.
I want the symbol to be inserted using font face that is selected for the paragraph I am editing. Did I mess something with settings or is it a known bug? Is there any workaround? Hi Tomek, I understand that you are facing issues with inserting symbols in Word.

Please post to us with the required information and we will be happy to assist you further. Your description is not exactly accurate. Unlike ©, the ® and ™ symbols are already superscript in the font (most fonts, anyway); they do not need to have the Superscript font property applied.
Sometimes, if a font does not contain a particular symbol, Word will substitute another font, usually the worst possible selection (such as MS Mincho), which often will have very ugly characters and bizarre spacing. Could that be happening here? Microsoft MVP (Word) since 1999 Fairhope, Alabama USA http://ssbarnhill.com. I'm wondering if the characters are being inserted in the Symbol font, which does contain them in both serif and sans serif forms (the trademark sign is raised, the others not). If you insert symbols from this font, the font box will still display the name of the text font, and the appearance will not change if you change the font because the Symbol characters, being coded as 'decorative,' are actually inserted as Symbol fields (though Word no longer shows you the field code) with the font name hard-coded in the field. If you select the inserted character and open the Symbol dialog, what font is selected? Microsoft MVP (Word) since 1999 Fairhope, Alabama USA http://ssbarnhill.com.
